Surgery (from the Greek: χειρουργική cheirourgikē, via Latin: chirurgiae, meaning "hand work") is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, or sometimes for some other reason. An act of performing surgery may be called a surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. In this context, the verb operating means performing surgery. The adjective surgical means pertaining to surgery; e.g. surgical instruments or surgical nurse. The patient or subject on which the surgery is performed can be a person or an animal. A surgeon is a person who performs operations on patients. Persons described as surgeons are commonly medical practitioners, but the term is also applied to physicians, podiatric physicians, dentists and veterinarians. Surgery can last from minutes to hours, but is typically not an ongoing or periodic type of treatment. The term surgery can also refer to the place where surgery is performed, or simply the office of a physician, dentist, or veterinarian. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What healthcare providers cover orthognathic surgery and how much does it cost? Q. I'm with bluecross blueshield and they exclude this surgery. The real pain is my company just switched to blueshield from aetna, who does cover it. Just my luck. This surgery is very important to me, I want to fix my underbite. Does anyone know what healthcare providers cover this, and what employers use it so I know where to apply to get this insurance? Or at least recommend an oral surgeon that knows what he's doing and is somewhat affordable? Thanks. Asked by Ryan - Thu Oct 1 17:00:32 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. An option to consider is traveling overseas for your dental work. I am originally from Los Angeles, but have been living in Monterrey, Mexico for about 2 years now. I have had regular dental visits and am VERY impressed with the quality of the facilities and the doctors. The best part is that dental work is about 50% less expensive here than it is in the U.S! Monterrey, Mexico is just two hours south of Texas, so it is very easy to get to wherever you are. And, you can always combine your visit with a vacation! Answered by TravelForCare - Fri Oct 2 12:30:39 2009 What is the surgery and recovery like to fix a partially torn meniscus (In the knee)? Q. I have to have this surgery and I was wondering what the recovery is like so I can schedule the surgery when it will fit in with school and vacation best. Will I have to be on crutches? If so, how long? How soon after the surgery will I be able to walk up and down hills will no problem? Also, how is the surgery itself? I've had a bunch of operations before, so I'm not really worried, but it will be nice to know what other peoples experiences were. Thanks! There are two different ways to fix meniscus tear, one involves repairing the tear, the second is a menisectomy. A menisectomy involves cutting out the torn portion and smoothing out the edges. This is done arthroscopically generally as an outpatient procedure. You may be on crutches for a couple of days, but most patients really don't need them. Recovery is quick as is return to normal activities. You may be sore for a while, but really only have pain the first couple days or so. This option is not ideal because any loss of meniscus can increase your chance of arthritis in the future. It can also make you more prone to further damage. A meniscus repair is much… [cont.] Answered by ATsoccergirl - Sun Aug 17 16:30:10 2008 How many people die in surgery every year?
Q. I am due to have my very first surgery here in the next month and am getting very nervous. I would just like an estimated answer of how many people die in surgery (in the United States) every year. Asked by Laura H - Tue Apr 21 09:48:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't forget it 99% also depends on the condition of the patient BEFORE surgery. Say a traffic accident victim came in for surgery and his head was torn to bits, but surgery might save his or her life. Chances are higher that the person might die during surgery. Which brings up the statistic. But if no surgery were done at all the patient would die for sure. If you are in good health before surgery (heart, weight etc) No worries. 99.999% success rate I'd say.
