Abdominal obesity, colloquially known as belly fat or clinically as central obesity, is the accumulation of visceral fat resulting in an increase in waist size. There is a strong correlation between central obesity and cardiovascular disease. Visceral fat, also known as organ fat or intra-abdominal fat, is located inside the peritoneal cavity, packed in between internal organs and torso, as opposed to subcutaneous fat which is found underneath the skin, and intramuscular fat which is found interspersed in skeletal muscle. Visceral fat is composed of several adipose depots including mesenteric, epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT) and perirenal depots. An excess of visceral fat is known as central obesity, the "pot belly" or "beer belly" effect, in which the abdomen protrudes excessively. This body type is also known as "apple shaped", as opposed to "pear shaped", in which fat is deposited on the hips and buttocks. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by anissia - Thu Aug 17 07:44:44 2006 Could my mom have Cushing's Syndrome? Q. I'm wondering if my mom could possibly have Cushing's Syndrome. She has diabetes which I heard is a complication of Cushing's and high blood pressure and central obesity. She bruises pretty easily. She also has high blood sugar and is tired a lot. Could these be signs that she has Cushing's? Asked by Max - Sat Jul 12 21:31:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is possible. Many doctors overlook it. While is it said to be rare, if your mom is showing signs and symptoms beyond just diabetes (since diabetes is a symptom of Cushing's), then she should be tested. However, I know since I was in her shoes, many doctors will skoff at the idea so she may have to ask a lot of doctors before she can get tested but the bruising and central obesity plus if she is having difficulty getting her diabetes under control and has other symptoms well that can point to another source such as Cushing's. Ask for a 24 hour urinary free cortisol test, an 8am serum cortisol and 8am ACTH test (both fasting) and ask that they be done several times. Often, doctors will do a dexamethasone suppression test and want to… [cont.] Answered by Jen S - Mon Jul 14 10:00:59 2008 pot belly causes other than fat?
Q. i eat a fairly healthy diet and exercise (mostly light weight lifting and occasionally aerobics.) I weight 125 lbs and am 5'5". I always have a bit of a pot belly ... a layer of fat over my abs that i can't get rid of. I have well toned abs underneath, I can fell their definition below the layer of fat (or at least that is what the layer is made of...) I've hear on a few newstations that there are other reasons why one can have this "central obesity" or "pot belly" ... what are they? and how can I know if I have them? ultimately how can i fix the problem? Asked by person123 - Sun Sep 7 22:46:47 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Consider doing research on dieting, how many meals a day, what should be your daily calorie intakes, etc. Exercise is probably not the problem, its most like your diet. Instead of aerobics, try cardio. Answered by Justin - Sun Sep 7 22:51:56 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Central obesity" |
