Abdominal obesity, colloquially known as belly fat or clinically as central obesity, is the accumulation of abdominal fat resulting in an increase in waist size. There is a strong correlation between central obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Visceral fat, also known as organ fat or intra-abdominal fat, is located inside the peritoneal cavity, packed in between internal organs and torso, as opposed to subcutaneous fat which is found underneath the skin, and intramuscular fat which is found interspersed in skeletal muscle. Visceral fat is composed of several adipose depots including mesenteric, epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT) and perirenal fat. An excess of visceral fat is known as central obesity, the "pot belly" or "beer belly" effect, in which the abdomen protrudes excessively. This body type is also known as "apple shaped", as opposed to "pear shaped", in which fat is deposited on the hips and buttocks.

Q. ...Does a glass of lemon water every morning help in reducing abdominal obesity?

A. Don't know where you heard this, but lemon water 1/2 hour before meals does stimulate the body's production of certain digestive enzymes. Check out the internet or library for help with overall dietary improvements, combine this with more exercise (spring, summer and beautiful fall make this realistic), and you're in a good starting place to combat the belly fat issue. Best to you!

Cause of exclusively central obesity?
Q. I'm 6'2 and weight 215lbs, but all my weight is carried centrally (abdominal/torso area). My arms and legs are still as thin as they were when I weight 145 lbs. My limbs (especially arms) have very long bones which are extremely close together and no fat or muscle will go into them, no matter how much I work out (muscle) or how much I eat (fat). Is there a medical reason why I can only gain mass centrally?

A. In my experience, different people gain weight differently. For example, my weight goes exclusively to my rear end, while my friend's is concentrated in her mid-section. I don't think that it's a medical thing as much as genetics and hormones. For me, my breasts are the same size at 160lbs as they were at 120lbs. Eating foods that are high in fat and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol also contribute to a larger mid-section. The fat from foods that are high in bad fats (for example, saturated fats) tend to settle in areas around your stomach. This could be your problem as well. To combat this, you really need to do targeted training. It seems as though you are aware of where your weight is concentrated. Cardio is always important to… [cont.]
