Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m and 30 kg/m, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness. Evidence to support the view that some obese people eat little yet gain weight due to a slow metabolism is limited; on average obese people have a greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass. The primary treatment for obesity is dieting and physical exercise. To supplement this, or in case of failure, anti-obesity drugs may be taken to reduce appetite or inhibit fat absorption. In severe cases, surgery is performed or an intragastric balloon is placed to reduce stomach volume and/or bowel length, leading to earlier satiation and reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food. Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. Obesity is stigmatized in the modern Western world, though it has been perceived as a symbol of wealth and fertility at other times in history, and still is in many parts of Africa. Because of everything has sugar added to it, or is made of white flour (all the nutrients are bleached out of it) Plus America's gluttony is the number one cause of that problem Answered by Blazin 22s - Sun Nov 16 18:56:32 2008 What dangers does obesity have in pregnancy? Q. Other than the normal stuff like high blood pressure and stuff like that, what dangers does obesity have when you are pregnant? And is it more difficult to get pregnant if you are obese than when you are a "normal" weight? Asked by Kay T - Sat Jul 18 14:34:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, its more difficult to get pregnant if you're overweight. Being overweight, you're at risk for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. I'm sure there are other things, but those are the main two I thought of. You generally get a gestational diabetes test at some point in your pregnancy. You drink a nasty sugar drink and they test your blood for it. I had the signs of pre-e with my second pregnancy because I was overweight from my first one. (65lbs) Which is why I was induced. Q. I'm on a veterinary course and need to find what kind of problem obesity could cause to the heart of an animal. Asked by Isabella - Tue Oct 7 10:09:02 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Surely the same problems found in humans with obesity? Arteries surrounding the heart will suffer from atherosclerosis (the build up of plaque on the artery wall, increasing friction between the wall and blood). This can lead to blood clotting and blockages, which could cause a heart attack because the coronary arteries are deprived of nutrients.
